Course Description

Municipal Survey is a hands-on, entry-level course designed to introduce participants to the core techniques and tools used in construction surveying. From levelling and grade setting to field pickup and layout, this course covers the foundational skills needed to support road reconstruction and general construction projects. 

Participants will gain practical experience with transit and level instruments and learn how to perform essential survey calculations. Whether you’re new to surveying or looking to build confidence in the field, this course will prepare you to support municipal infrastructure with precision and professionalism.

Participants must be able to perform basic arithmetic calculations, such as: % Grade = (Difference in Elevation / Distance) × 100%

  • Engineering Institute of Canada: Awards 2 Continuing Education Units (CEUs) 

Donald Johnson, Consultant,  RSM Building Consultants (Retired) – Donald graduated from Fanshawe College in Civil Engineering Technology diploma and has a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from University of Western. He has a wealth of municipal experience, working for the City of London for 10 years in Road Design and Building Departments. He spent 22 years in the Building Department with the Town of Ingersoll and he’s now officially retired, however works part-time for RSM Building Consultants in Kitchener. He’s been an active volunteer instructor for more than 39 years with Good Roads for the Municipal Survey course.
