Trenchless technologies encompass the methods and tools used for the installation, replacement, rehabilitation, location, and condition assessment of underground pipelines and utilities with minimal surface disruption. This course provides an introduction to state-of-the-art trenchless methods for new pipe installation, including horizontal directional drilling (HDD), microtunnelling, pipe jacking, and pipe bursting, as well as rehabilitation technologies such as cured-in-place pipe (CIPP), sliplining, spiral-wound lining, and spray-in-place pipe (SIPP).
Topics also include project feasibility assessment and planning, utility investigations, condition assessment, technology selection, risk management, quality assurance and quality control (QA/QC), and industry best practices, standards, and specifications.

Trenchless technologies offer a cost-effective alternative to conventional open-cut construction by minimizing excavation, reducing disruption to traffic, businesses, and communities, and lowering environmental impacts. They are particularly well suited for crossings beneath roads, railways, watercourses, and environmentally sensitive areas where open excavation is impractical or costly.
Municipalities across North America have realized substantial cost savings through trenchless rehabilitation programs while extending the service life of critical underground infrastructure. For example, the City of Winnipeg reported more than $130 million in savings through its CIPP sewer rehabilitation program, while the City of Hamilton has realized approximately $200 million in cost avoidance through trenchless sewer renewal.

Rizwan Younis, PhD, P.Eng.
Rizwan Younis specializes in trenchless rehabilitation and replacement of underground pipelines, pipeline condition assessment, and buried infrastructure asset management. He currently works for the City of Guelph, where he leads the watermain renewal program and is responsible for the planning, design, project management, construction, and contract administration of selected operational and capital infrastructure projects. Previously, Dr. Younis managed and delivered the most extensive trenchless technology education program at the University of Waterloo's Centre for Advancement of Trenchless Technologies (CATT) from 2009 to 2021. He helped develop and deliver the Horizontal Directional Drilling Fundamentals field course with Fleming College and has provided training to organizations including the City of Toronto, City of Markham, WSP, and Enbridge Gas. Prior to his academic career, Dr. Younis worked as a design and construction engineer on major transportation and water infrastructure projects. Dr. Younis holds a PhD in Civil Engineering and a Bachelor of Mathematics (Honours Systems Management) from the University of Waterloo, as well as a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from the University of Engineering and Technology, Lahore, Pakistan

Gordon Henrich specializes in multi-sensor pipeline inspection and trenchless rehabilitation. For more than 20 years, Gordon has provided unique, evidence-based pipeline inspection methods and state-of-the-art rehabilitation solutions to contractors and the municipal market, with a focus on affordability, flexibility, accuracy, and performance. In addition, Gordon established Pipeline Integrity Technology Associates (PITA) to ensure that suitable technology is used for each unique application and at a fair market price for pipeline owners. Gord has published peer-reviewed papers, developed training programs, and presented at several national and international forums.
