Good Roads’ education team is being recognized by H5P, the interactive learning platform that powers many of our online training activities, in a new customer story highlighting how our digital programs are reaching municipal road crews across Ontario — and beyond.

The feature, titled “Training that goes the distance,” looks at how our Education department transformed municipal training from an in-person-only model into a growing online program, without losing the hands-on, practical feel our learners expect.

Why This Matters

For many Good Roads members, especially those in remote and Northern Ontario municipalities, attending in-person training has historically meant long drives, time away from work, and real travel costs. Our online courses — built using H5P’s interactive tools inside our learning management system — are designed to close that gap by bringing practical, scenario-based training directly to municipal staff wherever they are.

According to the H5P feature, Good Roads’ online program has grown from 40 learners in 2022 to more than 500 a year today, with course completion rates above 90% and assessment scores consistently above 80%. Learners are also finding and completing our courses from as far away as British Columbia and New Brunswick, purely through word of mouth and search — no paid advertising involved.

For municipalities, the shift to online learning also means real savings: the story cites more than $1,500 saved per learner in avoided travel, accommodation, and backfill costs.

What Makes the Courses Work

Rather than standard click-through compliance modules, our courses use branching scenarios, interactive video, hotspots, and sorting exercises that let learners apply their field knowledge in realistic, low-pressure situations. Most activities are ungraded and allow unlimited attempts, giving experienced road crew staff room to check their knowledge against current practice without the stakes of a formal test.

Eric Young, Good Roads’ Manager of Education, is featured throughout the story discussing the program’s growth and the tools behind it. On the return on investment of building courses this way, he put it simply:

“The return on investment has been massive… Building a lot of activities takes time and money, and H5P reduces both of those things.”

What This Means for Our Online Programs

This recognition reflects the continued investment Good Roads is making in accessible, practical training for municipal staff across the province. With three new courses launching in January and more planned each year after, online learning remains our fastest-growing education program — built to reach members no matter how far they are from the nearest classroom.
